Insurance
Association of Metro Detroit, Inc. (IAMD) as it is
titled today was formed in February 1936 as the Detroit
Insurance
Women’s
League. The purpose of the league was mutual aid and cooperation
by means of its division: employment, insurance education,
help in sickness and distress, and social entertainment.
Meanwhile,
in 1938 Elsie Mayer and Bertha Rachofsky joined with
nine other Denver Insurance Women to form an organization
for education purposes. The two most challenging aspects
facing Insurance Women of Denver in those first years
were soliciting
members and convincing employers that the association’s
purpose was truly educational and not a cover for union activities.
The organization expanded to include members from 12 other
states and they held their first Organizational Meeting in
June 1940. The result of this meeting was the formation of
the National Association of Insurance Women, which adopted
the creed of Fellowship – Loyalty – Education.
The
Detroit Insurance Women’s League
joined the National Association of Insurance Women
in July 1948. The goals of
our association and NAIW, then and now, are to promote
insurance education, to support the professional advancement
of its
members,
to cultivate fellowship within the association and
to strengthen loyalty to the industry.
IAMD
is a very dynamic group of insurance professionals
involved in educational, community and charitable
activities. We hold
numerous Continuing Education classes, NAIW developed
programs for public speaking and development of
insurance skills, and
other educational opportunities for both our members
and others in the insurance community. We regularly
sponsor fundraising
activities to support community and charitable
organizations, such as, The Thin Blue Line, Mercy
Education Program, Race
for the Cure, and Operation Good Cheer to benefit
underprivileged children. |
